ESL Instructor

Put your passion for teaching to work!  The Instructor of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) will perform activities involved in hosting a classroom of adult students; administering class assignments, tests and assessments, conversation practice, homework assignments, etc. 

 

Duties 

Duties include but are not limited to the following: 

  • Maintain a phone list of all students and check attendance for each class 
  • Turn in weekly to the instructor a copy of the attendance record 
  • Assist with calling or texting all students who were absent from class 
  • Gently remind students the importance of attending class to improve their English 
  • Walk around the room during class to ensure proper notes and answers are written and proper spelling is used for main or covered concepts, relaying to the teacher any areas that need to be reviewed before moving on 
  • Teach classes when instructor is absent 
  • Prepare extensions activities, projects, or games as needed 
  • Help instructor ensure that copies of lessons are maintained in accordion files 
  • Provide absent students with copies of classes missed that students will complete as homework 
  • Ensure that all homework is turned in at the beginning of class 
  • Correct homework during class as needed 
  • Participate in conversation exchange activities 
  • Provide helpful teaching points as asked or as needed

 

Required Skills 

The following skills are preferred: 

  • Heartfelt desire to help Arabic speakers learn English 
  • Strong English speaking skills a must (or bilingual Arabic/English) 
  • ESOL teaching or other teaching experience a plus 
  • Strong presentation and verbal skills (reading, writing, spelling, speaking) 
  • Strong customer service skills, personable and outgoing, service-oriented 
  • Patient, flexible, and positive attitude 
  • Professional, dependable and punctual

 

Work Hours

Volunteers are needed during the following class times:

  • Monday & Wednesday 10:30am – 12:00pm, 12:00 – 1:30pm
  • Monday & Thursday 10:30am – 12:00pm

Only 3 excused absences permitted per semester.

 

Dress Code

Please dress modestly. We encourage women to wear long pants or a long skirt. Nothing tight. Tops should fully cover shoulders; three-quarter sleeves or longer preferred.

 

All volunteers are subject to background checks.
